Meet the founder

Danny Smith is married to Joan and lives in Surrey. They have three children: Rachel and Luke; their eldest daughter Jessica passed away unexpectedly in December 2007, an event he described as ‘traumatic and transforming’.

Danny, an Anglo Indian, made his career in publishing, media and journalism. With a lifelong interest in music, he has interviewed Little Richard, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, among others.

After Danny led the successful Campaign to Free the Siberian Seven, together with David Alton (an MP in the Liberal Party at the time) and others, he launched Jubilee Campaign in Parliament in 1987. At the forefront of clandestine work in Ceausescu’s Romania, Danny helped Olivia Harrison and the wives of the Beatles to establish the Romanian Angel Appeal in 1989 and served this pioneering work as a trustee.

Academy award winning film maker Scott Hillier nominated Danny for an award for his work with Jubilee Campaign.

Danny Smith honoured

Danny Smith was honoured for his work with Jubilee Campaign by the Order of the Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem, a historical order that trace their roots to the knights of the twelfth century.

Danny accepted the award on behalf of all who worked for justice:

“When one is honoured, all are honoured.”
