Meet the Founder Danny Smith

Danny Smith, Founder.Danny Smith is married to Joan and lives in Surrey. They have three children – Rachel, Luke and Jessica, who passed away unexpectedly in December 2007, an event he described as ‘traumatic and transforming’.
An Anglo Indian, Danny made his career in journalism, media and communications. With a life-long interest in music, he has interviewed Mahalia Jackson, Little Richard, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Peter, Paul & Mary, among others. His mentors include George Verwer, of Operation Mobilisation, and Peter Benenson, the founder of Amnesty International, whose strategic influence shaped Danny’s life’s work and the direction of Jubilee Campaign – launched in Parliament by David Alton in 1987.
Danny led the successful ‘Campaign to free the Siberian Seven’ launched by Buzz Magazine’s Peter Meadows at Spring Harvest. Since then he has been involved with many successful campaigns including [with Fr Shay Cullen] a change in the law to prosecute British sex tourists who travel abroad to abuse children and a ‘Kids Behind Bars’ campaign resulting in changes in the law in the Philippines.
At the forefront of clandestine work in Ceausescu’s Romania, Danny helped Olivia Harrison and the wives of the Beatles to establish the Romanian Angel Appeal in 1989 and served this pioneering work as a trustee. In 2005, he delivered the keynote address at the graduation service at the Handong International Law School in South Korea; Lord Janner declared his book on Raoul Wallenberg, Lost Hero, ‘should be compulsory reading in all our schools.’
Danny’s mission now is to concentrate on a charitable tribute to Jessica in India, the Philippines and Zimbabwe so that many needy children can be helped in her name.
He will also work to develop Jubilee Campaign’s future direction as it combines effective lobbying with dynamic practical help for Children at Risk worldwide.
