The Boy who could never forget.
It was his first memory, a moment of searing intensity that he carried all the days of his life. He couldn’t move. It felt as though his feet were stuck to the ground. The memory was like a hot, burning coal scorching his bare skin. Every time it came to his mind, he trembled. The boy would never forget the day his father’s ear was cut off.
Josiah Henson was born a slave, like his parents, and was about five years old when he saw his father’s head bloodied, his back raw and bleeding. Years later, he recalled, “Father appeared one day covered in blood and in a state of great excitement… he was beside himself with mingled rage and suffering.”
